Thenamaris and Thenamaris LNG, two of the most prominent Greek Shipping companies, have chosen RINA as their exclusive partner for the Monitoring, Reporting & Verification of CO2 emissions Regulation (MRV) for their total combined fleet under management of over 80 modern vessels, mainly oil tankers, bulkers and LNG carriers.

The new regulation was developed in response to the challenge of reducing greenhouse gases in European territories to meet the 2050 targets set by the EU. The EU Commission strategy suggests that the CO2 emissions from maritime transport should be cut by at least 40% from 2005 levels by 2050.

• MRV is compulsory and is applicable to ships greater than 5,000 gt that undertake one or more commercial voyages (cargo or passengers) into or out of EU ports.

By August 2017, ship owners must submit to their verifier the CO2 Monitoring Plan of each ship of their fleet and from 2018 onwards they will be required to monitor emissions, fuel consumption and other parameters that will have to be reported and verified on an annual basis.

► Minas Giaouzis, technical manager of Thenamaris, said:

“We have been working on the performance monitoring of our fleet for several years now and are pleased to cooperate on this important aspect of our operations with RINA. We are happy to speak the same language with the team of experts that RINA Hellas provides next to us.”

We have been accredited by ACCREDIA for this activity and we are also a designated operational entity (DOE) accredited by the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) for the validation and verification of Clean Development Mechanism projects.
