and Cosco Pacific today have signed the
agreement for the concession of the port of Piraeus
container terminal, in attendance of Prime Minister Costas
Karamanlis and Chinese President Hu Jintao, as a part of
three bilateral agreements between Greece and China.
Kostas Karamanlis
said that, the shipping sector was a "strategic field of
cooperation" between the two countries, and noted the significant
presence of Greek ship-owners in the merchandises’
transport from China, as well as their orders for
newbuildings to the Chinese shipyards.
In addition, stressed the important role of China
in global economic developments, particularly in light of the
current credit crisis. Regarding the agreement for the
concession of the Piraeus’ container terminal, he noted
that Greece was evolving into a transit hub for Southern
Europe.
President Hu Jintao stressed that priority –between others-
must now be turned to the cooperation in the shipping sector
through investments and
infrastructures.
