Arabian interests VLCC “Sirius Star” attacked by pirates

The VLCC “Sirius Star” was attacked 450nm south-east of Mogadishu. The Liberian flagged crude oil vessel of 319,430 dwt, owned by Saudi Arabian interests (crew 25), is the largest to be hijacked to date.

The IMB Piracy Reporting Centre (PRC), reported a large volume of piratical activity off East Africa in 2008, principally centred around the Gulf of Aden and East coast of Somalia, where there have been 92 attacks on vessels (36 of which have been successful hijackings). In addition, 14 vessels have being held with 268 crew hostage.
